Bulletin of August 28, 2005

Dear Parishioners,

On Tuesday, August 16th a Protestant monk died and the Catholic Church grieved worldwide. Brother Roger Schutz, founder of the Taize Community, a man of peace and artisan of reconciliation was leading 2,500 young people at evening prayer when the 90 year old monk was stabbed in the back and neck and died shortly after.

In the early 90’s through Margo Schorno Christ the King invited two monks of Taize to visit with us from their mission in Harlem of New York. They led a day long retreat for young adults and an evening Taize prayer service for a church full of parishioners. Since that day we have sponsored the monthly Taize Prayer around the Cross here and at six different Pleasant Hill churches.

Brother Roger dreamt of reconciliation between Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox Christians. He settled in the small French border village of Taize in 1940 and housed refugees and Jews fleeing to Switzerland; in 1949 with seven brothers he formed a celibate community dedicated to ecumenical prayer. Today his little center is visited by 6,000 youths each week and over 100,000 pilgrims each year for prayer services three times a day, Bible study and discussion groups. Small fraternities of brothers now live in the poorest neighborhoods of Asia, Africa, South America and North America. The community in Taize includes 120 brothers from both Catholic and Protestant traditions and from 25 different countries. The name Taize and its simple but unique prayer style evokes peace, reconciliation and the hope for a fresh springtime in the Church. Although intercommunion at the Eucharist is not practiced at Taize, at the funeral of Pope John Paul II, Cardinal Ratzinger (now Benedict XVI) made a point of giving communion to his Protestant Brother Roger.

There will be a very special Taize prayer service led by Sr. Suzanne Toolan at the Mercy Center in Burlingame on Friday, September 2nd at 8:00 pm. Our monthly Taize Prayer service will continue on the first Sunday of each month.

This fall we open an outstanding weekday Bible Study. It will be held on eight consecutive Thursday mornings (9:30-11:00 am) beginning September 29th. Leading the Bible Study will be our own parishioner Kathy Roberts who has drawn hundreds to the Community Bible Study she has directed at other churches for years. Those who have studied with her or heard her at the retreat day she led here last Fall, know what an outstanding presenter she is. If you can possibly spare two hours on a Thursday morning (babysitting will be provided), you really should not miss this great opportunity.

Your Pastor,
Brian Joyce

Our Children on Prayer

Time to Pray –

A pastor asked a little boy if he said his prayers every night. “Yes sir,” the boy replied. “And, do you always say them in the morning, too?” the pastor asked. “No sir,” the boy replied. “I ain’t scared in the daytime.”

Say a Prayer –

Little Johnny and his family were having Sunday dinner at his Grandmother’s house. Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served. When little Johnny received his place, he started eating right away. “Johnny wait until we say our prayer.” “I don’t have to,” the boy replied. “Of course you do,” his mother insisted. “We say a prayer before eating at our house.” “That’s our house,” Johnny explained. “But this is Grandma’s house and she knows how to cook!”

What did he pray for . . .

A visiting minister during the offertory prayer: Dear Lord,” he began with arms extended and a rapturous look on his upturned face, “without you we are but dust…” He would have continued, but at that silent, awkward moment when he paused for a breath, one very obedient little girl (who as listening carefully for a change!) leaned over to her mother and asked quite audibly in her shrill little girl voice, “Mommy, WHAT is butt dust?” Church was pretty much over at that point . . .
