Bulletin of November 6, 2005

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend we focus on Bereavement and our loved ones who have gone before us. For some Bereavement means a deep sense of loss, for others bittersweet memories, for some gratitude for the lives we once shared, for others unresolved feelings – things we failed to say, forgiveness we didn’t seek, regrets we still carry -- and much more. Whatever “bereavement” means for you, this weekend, rather than bury or ignore it, we raise it up and pray God’s choicest blessing on those who have gone before us and on ourselves as well.

Among the many named in this bulletin, in our prayers and in our hearts, two giants stand out whom a large number of parishioners will never forget. Msgr. Wade who served as pastor from 1962 to 1988 and was retired pastor emeritus from 1988 to 1999 and Margo Schorno who served as associate pastor from 1988 until 1999. They died just days apart from each other, now six years ago. Those who knew them and were touched by their lives will never forget either of them – their care, their ministry, their love and their faith. Tomorrow, Monday November 7th, we invite everyone to join us for a brief (20 minute) memorial service at their gravesides in Queen of Heaven Cemetery at 12:15 pm. We hope as many as possible can join us by their adjacent graves (or if the weather is “Irish” as Monsignor would say – inside the Mausoleum). It is a way to give thanks to them and to God for what they have given Christ the King parish and to commit ourselves once again to the gospel, standards and dreams to which they gave themselves so generously.

May I call your attention to two information tables outside after masses today. One is to encourage you to participate in preparing for our Parish Council election at the end of this month. This first step is to surface nominees – that may be by nominating yourself if you are interested or by nominating a fellow parishioner you feel would be well qualified to serve as a Parish Council member. All nominees will be contacted for a brief orientation meeting before they make a final decision to run for election. Nomination forms and information are available at the table after mass. Please give serious consideration to nominating yourself or another worthy candidate.

The second table invites you to be part of the Christmas Adopt-a-Family program organized by the Monument Crisis Center. Stop by the information table to sign up for a family and receive their gift wish list or to volunteer to help at the collection warehouse on December 10/11 or December 17/18 or to deliver gifts to the families.

Your Pastor,
Brian Joyce

Advent Faith & Life Sharing – In a large parish like Christ the King, it’s easy to get lost in the crowd. Small Church Communities offer an opportunity to share with other parishioners in groups of 8-10. Our Advent 4-week series will begin the week of Nov. 20th. For information about how you can participate, call Judy Pieralde, 229-2009.

Small Church Community facilitators may pick up their packets for the Advent season on the weekend of November 12-13. The packet will be located in the vestibule of the church. Any questions call Judy Pieralde 2902009.

Volunteer Team Decision Makers Needed – Catholic Charities of the East Bay, in conjunction with Contra Costa County’s Child Protective Services Dept. is seeking volunteers to serve as Team Decision Makers within the Contra Costa community. If you are a professional community member who wishes to get involved in decisions affecting the lives of children and their families, please contact Catholic Charities. Training will be provided.
