Bulletin of November 27, 2005

Dear Parishioners,

I know that many of us think of this as “Thanksgiving weekend”, but more importantly it is the first Sunday of Advent and marks a four week season that calls us to prepare with some prayer and reflection and not just decorating and shopping. for Christ’s coming (both the celebration of Christmas and his second coming at the end of time - either ours, the world’s or both!). Here at Christ the King we celebrate Advent as a season of waiting by focusing on “A Different Kind of Waiting…”

Two practical suggestions for Advent: 1) Pick up a “Little Blue Book: today and use it daily. The Little Blue Book invites you to spend six minutes a day in reflection during the Advent and Christmas season. The left page for each day offers a buffet of facts, stories, customs and traditions; the right hand page walks us through the gospel according to Luke. The cover is deliberately blank so the shy ones among us can use the book while waiting in a doctor office, or for an appointment without flaunting our prayer life! We’re making the books available for everyone at no cost (but if you want to drop in a dollar to defray the parish expenses that is appreciated). 2) Mark your calendar for our Advent Communal Penance Service – either Friday evening December 16th at 7:30 pm or Saturday afternoon December 17th at 3:30 pm.

On Sunday evening December 3rd at 7:30 pm Newman Hall in Berkeley hosts an evening conversation with Martin Sheen (of West Wing fame) and Fr. Ray Bourgeois, Maryknoll priest and dedicated activist against the “School of the Americas”. They will be discussing their lives, their work and the legacy of the late Fr. Bill O’Donnell. December 8th marks the 2nd anniversary of Bill’s death. Proceeds from the evening benefit the San Carlos Foundation which will also be selling handcrafts from Latin America here at Christ the King after all masses next weekend.

Finally it’s election time! Please look over the ballot and brief description of the nominees for our Parish Council Election. Those elected will serve a four year term bringing advice and determining long range planning for the life of our parish. Thank you to all the nominees for running; Thank you for voting.

Your Pastor,
Brian Joyce

P.S. Don’t forget next Sunday afternoon at 4:00 pm we have our annual Interfaith Advent Concert here in Church. A delightful and inspiring concert of music that brings together the choirs of our neighboring Christian Churches along with our own 10:45 choir.

A New Cathedral, A New Cathedral Center

Since the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989, which caused the devastation of St. Francis de Sales, the Diocese of Oakland has been without a Cathedral. It has been a painful loss: our Cathedral had become nationally known for its excellent liturgy, as well as a center for services for the needy, a model for collaborative ministries and lay leadership, and a focal point for interfaith services, ethnic celebrations and wide ranging pastoral ministry.

The campaign to build a new Cathedral began with the conversations of parishioners, priests and Bishop Cummins in the mid 1990’s. In February 2000 representatives from parishes and religious organizations throughout the diocese reached a consensus that planning should go forward. Last May ground was broken for a new “Cathedral of Christ the Light” and a new Cathedral Center with buildings for parish life and ministry, a Convention Hall, Diocesan Chancery Offices and residences for Bishop and parish staff. Since then excavation work at the new Cathedral site is nearly finished and the outline of the Cathedral shape is now visible. The construction site is located in Oakland, beside Lake Merritt at the corner of Harrison and West Grand Ave. It is easily one of the most attractive and accessible locations in the East Bay. The projected cost for the purchase of property, the Cathedral building itself and the several related buildings and facilities is $131 million. Completion is scheduled for early in 2008. As of now $88 million dollars has been raised, and with the sale of some Diocesan properties the total amount raised is now just over $100 million.

You can see the Cathedral design, related information and daily photographs of construction progress by visiting www.christthelightcathedral.org

The Cathedral site and center with its several buildings will not only serve as a sign and symbol of the presence of the Catholic community in the East Bay but as a central worship and gathering place for our very diverse Diocese. The Cathedral will be a welcome place for downtown residents, city workers, civic and interfaith gatherings, multicultural events and home to all 89 parishes of the two East Bay Counties. As in the past it will be center and network for important ministries especially to the needy. Current ministries like community organization, tutoring, winter shelter and Habitat for Humanity will be enhanced as well as a support system for local services such as St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room, the Friendly Place for homeless women, the Next Step Learning Center, and the community and leadership to connect interested parishioners and outlying parishes to projects of service to the needy.

We are building a cathedral and much more!
