Bulletin of December 4, 2005
Dear Parishioners, We are in the middle of our annual Holiday Food Drive that brings food to hungry families and empty tables at Christmas time. Over 50 families are already known to our St. Vincent de Paul Society and as the Holiday nears, many, many more will be approaching us for help. Your donation of food staples or contribution of cash is greatly needed. I know you have already done a great deal in your generous response to Tsunami victims, to the homeless after Hurricane Katrina (whom we continue to assist), and for the Adopt a Family Program at the Monument Crisis Center where numerous parishioners have volunteered to help at the warehouse and to deliver gifts; over 120 Christ the King parishioners have “adopted” families. Plus our great Altar Society hosted a wonderful Holiday Boutique that netted $6,300 (special thanks to Gloria Simonetti and those who worked so generously and so hard and to those of you who kindly provided home-baked goods. Congratulations to our Raffle Winners: Theresa Hall, Mr. & Mrs. Newcomer, Nicole McCann, Lisa Santos and Sharon White.) Three “small gifts” back to all of you include this Sunday afternoon’s Interfaith Concert at 4:00 pm followed by refreshments, the “little blue book” for your Advent and Christmas reflection, and on Monday, December 19th the “3 ½ stories of Christmas” with actor Frank Runyon, a wonderful evening for anyone from 4 to 104! Today representatives of the San Carlos Foundation, which brings health and education assistance to the refugees and poor of Central America, hosts a sale of handcrafts and gifts after all masses. Free trade coffees, teas and chocolates are also available and rosaries are on sale after the Sunday masses. Next Sunday our Social Justice Ministry sponsors a Christmas collection of gifts for the needy to benefit the homeless in our Winter Nights program of rotating shelters and the Monument Crisis Center. This year Social Justice is asking for gift certificates/gift cards and cash. Winter Night requests tickets for BART, bus, gasoline or movies; Monument Crisis Center suggests gift cards for Safeway, fast food places, K-Mart, Target or Payless Shoes. Your Pastor,
P.S. Don’t forget, one of those “holy days of opportunity (obligation)” comes up this week with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary on Thursday, December 8th. Our masses are at 8:00 am, 11:00 am and 7:00 pm. |

Calling on society to “reject the tragic illusion that we can demonstrate respect for life by taking life”, the statement expresses the bishops’ commitment to “restrict, restrain and bring an end to the use of this ultimate penalty because it is deeply flawed and often unfair, and because we have other, better ways to protect society which are more respectful of human life and dignity.” During a workshop two days before, bishops heard from people with personal experience of the death penalty – the survivors of murder victims, the brother of a convicted killer and someone wrongfully sentenced to death. Those people “turned their loss and suffering into a compelling witness for life, all life.” Similar stories can be heard around the country, in families “for whom violent crime and the death penalty are not issues or causes, but sources of deep pain and heartbreak.” “We must reach out to them, to support and comfort, to care and stand with them. The death penalty offers a false path to healing and wholeness.” Archbishop Sean P. O’Malley of Boston, who has strongly opposed the restoration of capital punishment in Massachusetts said in an interview that a “sea change” is occurring among Catholics, who in the past have shown strong support for the death penalty. “As people began realizing that the dignity of human life was being diminished by abortion, it caused them to consider other ways in which the dignity of human life was being diminished.” According to the Bishop’s statement the United Sates should stop using the death penalty for four reasons:
Here at Christ the King we have scheduled a vigil from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm on Monday, December 12th the eve of the presently scheduled execution at San Quentin of Stanley “Tookie” Williams. ___________________________________________________________ |
