Bulletin of January 8, 2006
Dear Parishioners, This weekend the Christmas season draws to a close with the Feast of the Epiphany on January 8th and The Baptism of Jesus on January 9th. "Epiphany," "The Three Kings" or "The Feast of the Wise Men" traditionally falls on January 6th which was the date set for the birth of Jesus in the early Church in the East (places like Egypt, Armenia, Greece, Russia and present day Turkey). Most of the Christian world continues to celebrate Epiphany on January 6th, but in those few places where the day is not observed as a holy day of obligation (like here in the United States) Catholics transfer the celebration to the nearest Sunday. This allows us all to be present for the celebration; so welcome to the Wise Men and Happy Epiphany! Whatever we call it - "Epiphany," "Little Christmas," or "The 12th Day of Christmas" - this feast focuses on Christ's coming to all nations and peoples, symbolized by the "three wise men" (foreigners all), who came from beyond Judaism bearing gifts. Actually the Bible doesn't tell us how many there were and doesn't call them kings or wise men. One early tradition held that there were twelve, paralleling the twelve tribes of Israel or the twelve apostles. Scripture does mention three gifts of "gold, frankincense and myrrh," or as one second grader reported "gold, common sense and fur." It is a celebration that Christ opens hearts and calls forth generosity - a good weekend for our Social Justice Concerns with three presentations and collection. The three projects recommended to you this weekend are the "What if" Foundation in Haiti, The Monument Crisis Center and Mary Mahoney Fund, and the Share Foundation and our Sister Community in El Salvador. Along with our liturgies and Social Justice Appeal we mark the close of the Christmas Season and the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus with an "undecorating party" (help us if you can today at 1:30 pm) and with the Baptism of older youngsters next Saturday morning. Thank you to Sr. Maureen and our Religious Ed volunteers for preparing them since September. Some January dates and events to keep in mind:
Your Pastor,

WEEK AT A GLANCE ___________________________________________________________ CTK M.O.M.S. (Ministry of Mothers Sharing) group will resume meetings again in the new year every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 9:30 - 11:00 am. in the Ministry Center. We invite all moms of the parish to join us at our next meeting this Tuesday, January 10th. We will continue using the book, "Sacred Parenting," by Gary L. Thomas to guide our faith sharing. Childcare is available. For more information, or if you plan to join us, please contact Jennifer at 947-1089. Grief Workshop - The death of a loved one is unlike any other loss. Whether the death was sudden and tragic, or one with warning and preparation, the reality of death leaves most of us shocked, confused and sad. These feelings may linger for years. Grieving people need time and space to honor their grief. Your loss may be recent or it may be years ago. There will be a Spring Grief Ministry Workshop to help you begin the healing process. Dates and times: Tuesday, February 7th to March 21st, 7:30-9:00 pm in the Ministry Center. Call Sr. Joanne or Fr. Aidan at 682-2486 to register or email Fr. Aidan at ajmcaleenan@att.net to obtain additional information. Registration is required. What Can We Do? - When the word "cancer" or "tumor" is spoken to you by a medical professional fear is the emotion that comes to mind. Having had this experience and recognizing a need to address the concerns of our parishioners who are dealing with this very sensitive issue we are planning a meeting on Thursday 23rd of February 2006 at 7pm in the parish hall. The objective of the meeting will be to openly discuss and identify ways we as a parish could respond pastorally to those living with cancer and their loved ones. Who is invited? Anyone living with cancer, anyone who is or who was affected in any way; anyone who might want to help. Father Aidan will help facilitate the conversation along with the pastoral team. Anyone with agenda items or offers of help please contact Fr. Aidan at fr.aidan@ctkph.org. Winter Nights Thanks You - The homeless families who are guests in the Winter Nights Rotating Shelter, are grateful for the contributions parishioners at CTK made to the Christmas Collection. The money provides BART and bus tickets and gasoline for transporting the parents to work and the children to school. ___________________________________________________________ the Date of Easter on Epiphany This ancient Church proclamation dates from the time when calendars were not readily available. It was necessary to announce the date of Easter in advance since a lot of the liturgical year depends on that date. Some Churches still sing the proclamation after this Sunday's gospel with the following text: The glory of the Lord has shone upon us, and shall ever be manifest among us, until the day of his return. Through the rhythms of times and seasons let us celebrate the mysteries of salvation. Let us recall the year's culmination, the Easter Triduum of the Lord: his last supper; his crucifixion, his burial, and his rising, celebrated between the evening of the thirteenth of April and the evening of the sixteenth of April. Each Easter - as on each Sunday - the Holy Church makes present the great and saving deed by which Christ has for ever conquered sin and death. From Easter are reckoned all the days we keep holy. Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, will occur on the first of March. The Ascension of the Lord will be commemorated on the twenty-eighth of May. Pentecost, the joyful conclusion of the season of Easter, will be celebrated on the fourth of June. And this year the First Sunday of Advent will be on the third of December. Likewise the pilgrim Church proclaims the Passover of Christ in the feasts of the holy Mother of God, in the feasts of the Apostles and Saints, and in the commemoration of the faithful departed. To Jesus Christ, who was, who is, and who is to come, Lord of time and history, be endless praise, for ever and ever. Amen. ___________________________________________________________ |
