"I met Dale on the trip to the Holy Land. My mom asked me to go on this trip. I had qualms about going because I was worried I wouldn't fit in and may be not the kind of person that should be with a church group. My dad had just died and my mom usually can get me to do what she wants.
When I met Dale, I was immediately impressed with how nice he was. He was so down to earth. I was then impressed with his intelligence and knowledge. Usually highly intelligent people don't suffer fools well. Dale was nice to me and he made me feel comfortable talking with him.
I understand Dale was a convert. It is reassuring, for someone who was born a Roman Catholic, to know someone as intelligent and knowledgeable about religion as Dale was, chose my faith. I will always remember when our Holy land group was walking by the Jewish graveyard and our guide was confronted by an Arab. Since I grew up in Oakland, I learned if you sense trouble you put distance between you and it. I remember looking back seeing Dale try to talk to the man in what I am sure was an act of peace and kindness, as well as bravery.
Sometimes I wonder if we go through a form of purgatory here on earth. Does God give us something painful and difficult for a purpose? I was lucky to have met Dale. I will always remember him and think of him as an example of a good person. When I work to be a better person, Dale will be in my thoughts."
