In June of 2001 a duck made her home in the front yard of the parish house and sat hatching her eggs for nearly a full month. When the eggs were hatched the duck spent one day feeding and protecting its 12 young ducklings and then coaxed, marched and led them across our parking lot, up the sidewalk of Gregory Lane toward the canal where they disappeared from sight. Her nurturing, leadership and letting go skills reminded us of Margo, and Barbara Doan wrote about it: Sometimes I think she's a duck Laying upon her eggs She senses our doubt That she knows what she's about Still laying upon her eggs She nurtures and protects She gives them all her best Patiently laying upon her eggs Then one day they hatch A strong happy batch Of ducklings from her eggs Her patience paid off Our doubts she did scoff And merrily they went on their way In true Margo fashion With love and compassion She shows them all the way Teaching them what they need to know And gently letting them go Then she too, will go on her own way By Barbara Doan |
